Liposuction
The most common surgical procedure done in the United States, liposuction can help create a smoother and more shapely look to your body. Discussing your desires with Dr. Peters will lead to a positive, personalized outcome for you.
Liposuction is a surgery that improves body shape by removing excess fat. It is not a substitute for weight loss, and does not have the same benefit as diet and exercise. It will not reduce risk of heart disease, diabetes or in any way benefit metabolism and works best when coupled with lifestyle changes.
Best candidates for liposuction are at an appropriate weight; however, some overweight people can use the surgery as a jumpstart to take better care of their bodies. The maximum amount of fat that most surgeons regard as safe to remove is about five liters (11 pounds). The idea is not to change numbers
on the scale, but to improve body contour.
There are many options for liposuction with the choice dependent on the individual’s circumstances.
One popular method is the tumescent technique which involves placing fluid into the regions of fat deposits to be contoured. A small hollow tube (cannula) is used for vacuum removal of fat. The cannula is passed in multiple criss-crossing directions to sculpt. Dr. Peters uses the power-assisted lipoplasty machine (PAL) which provides a very smooth, targeted result.
Liposuction is often combined with other surgeries such as a tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift, buttock lift or arm reduction. The decision to contour by liposuction alone, or with a method to remove excess skin, depends on your body type and your goals.
